WHAT ARE SKIDS MOUNTED PLANTS?
Skids are modular industrial plants used for the treatment and management of fluids. The basic principle that guides the design of skids is the break down of a complex process into simpler parts. In fact, the skid is a portion of a plant, we can imagine the industrial plant as a puzzle where the various pieces are the skids.
As the technical term “skid” suggests, these systems are mounted on a frame that facilitates their transportation. Just as a sled serves to speed up transportation on a surface, skids are assembled in the workshop and then transported to their final destination.

WHAT ARE SKIDS MADE OF?
Base frame
Typical skid components
- Piping, tubing
- Manual or automatic valves
- Tanks
- Measuring instruments, flow, temperature, pressure
- Filters, membranes

Where are skids used?
Thanks to their size and modularity, skids are used in a wide range of industrial sectors.
In the Oil & Gas sector they are used for pumping and compressing petroleum products. In the chemical industry they are used for dosing chemical reagents (dosing skid). In the food industry they perform fluid mixing and process temperature control functions. In the pharmaceutical industry, they ensure a controlled environment in the purification and sterilization processes of solutions. In the naval industry, skids are used for conditioning and separating fuel. In the field of water treatment, skids play a crucial role in the filtration and purification of water for civil and industrial use.
Advantage of skids
The advantages are many thanks to the modularity and small size. The skids are pre-assembled and tested in the workshop and then transported to the final installation site, this significantly reduces costs and installation times. The design of the skids is aimed at reducing and optimizing spaces, this translates into less space on the installation site. The compactness of the skids makes them easy to transport both by land and by air or sea inside containers.
Skid and Package, differences
Although skids and packages are very similar, they have very distinct characteristics. Skids are part of a larger system; an industrial plant can be composed of multiple skids. Packages, on the other hand, are autonomous entities, providing a stand-alone solution, i.e. without connections to other systems. Packages, given their greater complexity, are equipped with electrical cabinet.
